Pride of the province of Reggio Calabria, around it carries several legendary stories, in particular that of the Moor of Spain, who for 18 scudi sold a branch to the Valentino of Reggio Calabria, who grafted it on a bitter orange in their possession in the district of Santa Caterina. Certain facts confirm that the first intensive plantation of bergamot trees dates back to 1750 on the Reggio coast, as well as the first true industrialization of the process of extracting essential oil from the peel thanks to a machine invented by Nicola Barillà from Reggio, called machine Calabrian, which guaranteed a high yield in a short time and at the same time an essence of excellent quality. Further confirmation of this is the fact that still today around 80% of the world production of bergamot and in general presence of bergamot groves is in the province of Reggio Calabria.
