Mandarin is, along with citron and pomelo, one of the three original citrus fruits of the genus Citrus , from whose crosses almost all the citrus fruits we know today (lemon, lime, oranges) developed.

Very important citrus fruit, both historically for the development of other citrus fruits, and commercially, due to the fact that over time various hybridizations and selections have resulted in the mandarin giving rise to many commercially important cultivars, including the clementine in which the bitter taste typical of the first species has been diluted particularly by crossing it with the pomelo
